Our Environment Environment

As well as our uncompromising approach to safety we also believe in running a business that is friendly to the environment and which supports its local community.

Rotorua Bungy/Swoop is a member of the Rotorua Sustainable Tourism Charter. As Charter members we areRotorua Sustainable Tourism Chapter required to continuously improve our environmental and social performance. To become a Charter member we were required to undergo an external sustainability assessment. Following this assessment we were given a long term sustainability plan which identified both the sustainability actions we have already implemented and those we can consider for the future.

In addition to our membership in the Rotorua Sustainable Tourism Charter we are also a Qaulmark endorsed attraction. To obtain this endorsement we had to undergo an independent audit by a Qualmark assessor. While Qualmark assessed the overall quality of our attraction, more than 10% of this assessment looked at our environmental and social performance.

So what have we done so far?

Some of the key sustainability actions we’ve taken include:

General
• Built a modern low maintenance facility with energy efficient lighting and heating

Environmental Protection
• Installed an advanced wastewater system to protect our streams and lakes
• Direct stormwater to landscaping ponds to avoid sediment in the stream
• Riparian planting along the Ngongotaha Stream to improve its water quality

Visual Amenity
• Painted the towers green and white to help them blend into the environment
• Planted bushes around the bottom of the towers to help soften their visual impact

Community Support
• Donate vouchers to schools and other organisations who us them for fund raising
• Hold fund raising BBQs to support Little League
• Donate staff time to mentor students both on site and at schools
• Support local businesses whenever possible

Waste Management
• Recycle all materials including demolition waste
• Make recycling available to visitors
• Give food scraps to the ‘resident’ pigs (the animal variety, not the staff)
• Include all marketing material on our website

What do we have planned for the future?

Some of the key actions we intend taking include:

• Aim for zero waste to landfill from our business
• Make sure all our printing is done with vegetable based dyes on recycled paper which is non-chlorine bleached
• Eliminate petroleum based plastic from our waste stream
• Collect rain water from the roof to reduce our water consumption
• Install solar heating
• Offset some of our carbon footprint by Planting ? hectares of land in native vegetation and placing a covenant over this land to ensure it is protected indefinitely.

Where to from here?

We realise this is an ongoing process and would appreciate your feedback on how well you think we’re doing environmentally and what additional actions you think we should take.
